Evolving Perceptions: A Learner's Journey with Assessment

As a learner, my journey with assessment has been one of evolution and growth. Reflecting on my old perceptions about the purposes of assessment, I realize that I once viewed it merely as a tool for grading and evaluation. Assessment, in my eyes, was primarily about measuring how well I memorized information and regurgitated it onto tests and assignments. Consequently, my approach to learning was often focused on memorization and surface-level understanding, with the sole aim of achieving high grades.

These beliefs about assessment influenced my personal approaches to learning in significant ways. I prioritized rote memorization over deep understanding, often cramming information before exams and forgetting it soon after. My focus was on achieving good grades rather than truly engaging with the material and applying it in meaningful ways. This approach to learning left me feeling stressed and overwhelmed, as I constantly chased after grades without truly understanding the purpose and value of what I was studying.

However, my perspective on assessment has undergone a transformation as I gained a new understanding of its purposes and alignment with learning goals. I now see assessment as much more than a tool for grading—it is a means of gauging learning progress, identifying areas for improvement, and providing feedback for growth. Instead of viewing assessment as the endpoint of learning, I now see it as an integral part of the learning process itself.

With this new understanding, I have experienced shifts in my beliefs, approaches, and values towards learning. I now prioritize depth of understanding over surface-level memorization, seeking to engage with the material in a meaningful way rather than simply aiming for high grades. I value feedback and reflection as essential components of my learning journey, using assessment as a tool for continuous improvement rather than a measure of success or failure.

In conclusion, my journey with assessment has been one of transformation—from viewing it as a means of grading to recognizing its role in supporting learning and growth. This shift in perception has led to changes in my approach to learning, as I now prioritize understanding, engagement, and reflection in my pursuit of knowledge. As I continue on this journey, I am excited to further explore the potential of assessment as a catalyst for meaningful learning experiences.
